Description
For this project, our core teachers, decided to give up their classes for the rest of the year to have an interdisciplinary project where we mixed all of the time together and created a design for a new campus for Animas. We were put in groups then they assigned us individual work where we read a story that and architect wrote so that we could get inspired, then we would go and do empathy interviews with people to find out what they valued about our school and what they thought could be improved. We then did our first prototype and got feedback on it. We made many more prototypes until exhibition came. For exhibition half of my group came and did an activity with visitors that would help us get more ideas for what we could add to our design. Then my and another one of my group members went and presented our prototype to visitors to get more feedback on what to change and what should stay. After exhibition we started working on the final prototype that we were going to present to the board of directors. We made a lot of changes to our final design. We made blueprints of our campus and a Budget for one specific room, 3D renderings on Sketch-Up of one of our rooms and an Abstract about our project.
Reflection
What did you learn about construction budgeting?
For the final product to present to the board, I did the budget. Overall it was pretty hard to find the pricing of things per square foot. If I needed the price of a chair, it was easy and I could just look it up and pick out which chair I liked. When I needed the price of concrete per square foot, it was hard to find a website that would just tell me the price without wanting me to sign up for things or telling them why I needed it. In the end if I needed something that I couldn’t find online we would have to go and ask one of my team member’s dad because he works in construction.
My team and I worked exceptionally well together and got lots of good work done but the most difficult part of this whole project was trying to split the work evenly between the four of us. When we were assigned something, we would split it up between us and some would work faster than others and then wouldn’t have anything to do. I think I have definitely grown as a collaborator and a leader during this project. I think this because when people were off task, Greta and I became leaders and helped people get back on task. In the end, I think that we could have tried to share the work more with our other two group members but I am also really happy with the outcome of our project. :)
I think that it is very important that students attending school should have an input on what it looks like. Students know what they like and what others like so they will learn differently depending on what a room feels like. User’s opinions are very important for what a room looks like. From empathy interviews, we learned that people really valued fresh modern feels and lots of bringing the outside in. Obviously there needs to be restrictions on what we put into a school but I definitely think that students and other users should have a strong input on what a school looks/feels like.
