Stonewall is seen as the start of the gay civil rights movement. But is it? To better understand Stonewall, we wanted to know what came before it. Who were the people and what were the events that set an example, ascending up to the prevailing harassment and discrimination of the time?
Timeline Outline
- January 1, 1965 - Fundraising costume ball organized by the Council on Religion and the Homosexual. Attendees allowed to dress in drag caused controversy and 2 attorneys to be arrested.
- July 4, 1965 - First Reminder Day March. Held in Philadelphia Independence Hall to remind the American public that gay people did not have their constitutional rights.
- June 29, 1969 - The Stonewall Inn (gay bar in NYC) police raid.
- July 4, 1969 - Last Reminder Day March.
- June 28, 1970 - First Gay Pride Parade.
